Business Advice for Musicians

Release lots of music,

First: conquer your backyard.

Skip the middleman.

Work with people who don’t require convincing. Don’t spend much time begging people to ‘get it.’

Incorporate. Own your publishing.

Learn the marketing and business development skills other people are willing to sell you.

Use the internet; (1) keep it fresh by updating and networking. (2) Figure out where your potential audience is hanging out–check out forums; blogs and comment threads; email lists; the music-focused networks; and, seed interest with freebees

Get everybody’s name and email and give them something free in return.

Use your artistry to educate.

Experiment

Have fun; if you’re not having fun you’re not fully honoring your blessed talents and good fortune.
