Canis Lupus & fire Dance

Two by Philip Peris, ‘who plays the yidaki.’ I’m experimenting with ways to capture soundwaves (using a Panasonic wm1610) at different locations up the bore of my epoxy didj, and then extracting frequency ranges from the samples. Hmph, not ready to scare people, yet.

Dub Collision mix: True Man Magic World

Front Cover

I must have been in a mood when I quickly tossed together some ethno-jazz, afro and afro-blues, a couple of syncretists, a couple of nu-jazzers, a live track from the master drummer from South Africa, and a chestnut amped by a celebrated big band’s brass playing leader. It ends up a rare blend reaching for a spiritual or danceable tip. Take your pick. Enjoy.

Mail Beat

Okay, I hear this faint ticking sound while lounging about the living room. I go investigate. It’s not in the living room but I hear it behind the front inside door and go into the front hall. Standing still I hear it near the mail shute. Going closer, I discover the ambient beat coyly hiding in the mail shute. I go and grab the Zoom H4 and set it inside the shute. Gotcha! Oh member of the old house orchestra!

I’m slightly tempted to stick it in the sampler. In the last place we lived, one night the steam radiator started drumming the most amazing syncopated rhythm. It was kind of an 11/4 with 7/4 sliding around too. (Like I really know what it was. Not!) The greatest environmental sound I ever heard was at the old Lakewood Public Library, where a cold air return in a little reading area led to some kind of structural cavern. The sound was this rolling very low woosh-and-echo. I dragged Matt over to confirm my report, but the next day the sound had vanished.

Back on the Ranch

VideoRanch, Pa Nes’s online general store, came through with the first round of goodies. Literally, the compact discs of And the Hits Just Keep On Comin’ and Just Your Standard Ranch Stash, replace well-worn, beloved rubber. Due to a mistake, I got a gratis copy of Live at the Palais. And last, there was the double CD set of Live at the Britt. Much to my pleasure and surprise, as shown below, Pa Nes, signed one of the Britt discs. I’m not an autograph hound at all, yet because Pa Nes occupies a special place in my pantheon, the gesture is huge.

Nesmih signature
As I mentioned in the previous post, Nesmith is one of the few musicians I’d like to interrogate simply due to my projection about how damn interesting he seems to be as artist and entrepreneur and forward thinker.
